What to look for
- Website or extension? An extension replaces the new tab page in one browser. A website works everywhere you sign in: home computer, work laptop, a browser you can't install extensions on.
- Does it sync? If you use more than one computer, you want your setup to follow you without exporting and importing.
- Real information or just a pretty picture? Some start pages are mostly a background photo and a clock. Others show your actual day: calendars, email, news.
- Ads and tracking. Free usually means ads, donations, or a paid tier that pays for everything else.
OnePane
OnePane is a start page built around the things you check every morning. Good fit if you want one page that replaces your morning round of tabs. Not the best fit if you want a minimalist new tab with a photo and nothing else.
start.me
start.me is a long-running bookmark-first start page. You build pages of links and widgets, and it offers a browser extension as well as the website. The free plan allows up to three pages with basic widgets and shows ads. PRO (about $25 a year) removes ads, adds unlimited pages and more widgets. There are team plans for companies too.
Good fit if you have hundreds of bookmarks and want them organised on tidy pages.
Momentum
Momentum is a new tab extension known for its daily photo, greeting and daily focus. The free version includes to-dos, links, search, calendar and weather. Momentum Plus ($39.95 USD a year) adds focus tools like a site blocker and Pomodoro timer, integrations with to-do apps such as Asana, Todoist and Trello, world clocks, notes and more customisation.
Good fit if your main goal is focus and productivity rather than an information dashboard.
Bonjourr
Bonjourr is a free, open-source new tab extension for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge, made by two independent developers. It's minimalist and lovely: time-of-day backgrounds, a clock, weather, quick links, notes and a Pomodoro timer, with a lot of design options. It's funded by donations and doesn't collect your data.
Good fit if you want a calm, beautiful new tab and don't need calendars or email.
Tabliss
Tabliss is another free, open-source new tab extension for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. It has beautiful backgrounds, a clock, weather, a to-do list, quick links and a search box, with support for over 40 languages.
Good fit if you want a free, simple, pretty new tab.
Protopage
Protopage is a free personalised start page in the classic portal style: RSS feeds, bookmarks and sticky notes on tabbed pages. It's been around a long time and many former iGoogle and Netvibes users ended up there.
Good fit if you mostly want RSS feeds and links on one free page.
